Hi Anna. What do you do at GenomSys and what are you currently working on?
GenomSys - Rosa Anna Chintemi

Hi! At GenomSys I work as a Front-end Web Developer to architect and develop applications using web technologies. At the moment, I am working on multiple products, but the focus lies currently more on how to improve and simplify the process of starting an analysis in GenomSys Variant Analyzer.

What is your take on personalized medicine and what role does GenomSys play in that?

Personalized medicine is a modern solution to take care of people’s health and envies the most suitable treatment for each person based on their individualistic traits. And what is more individual than our DNA? So, knowing more about your genes, this information can help to tailor a treatment to your specific needs and hopefully cure the illness. In my opinion, GenomSys solutions aim to provide genomic data handling organizations the efficiency in IT to implement personalized medicine, as well as for individuals to be part of personalized medicine today.

What is the greatest benefit of MPEG-G in your opinion?

From my more technical point of view, the greatest benefit of MPEG-G is transmitting and processing compressed sequencing data in a faster way. The 4x higher compression benefit of MPEG-G reduces datasets significantly, and with the growing amount of data, this will become a relevant point. But solely the compression does not help for more efficiency. The way that MPEG-G is built and its Selective Access help to process files quickly even though they are compressed. This leads to easier dissemination of data, true efficiency in processing, and to reduced costs.

Genomic data and data privacy challenges. What is in your opinion a way to solve this issue?

Data privacy is one of the most felt issues of the digital age, but with new standards and technologies, it improves year by year. GenomSys is doing a good job on data security, ensuring good results for those who rely on it.

Why did you join GenomSys?

I liked the idea of being able to contribute to the dissemination of genomic analyzes and the facilitation of personalized medicine through the most modern web technologies and data compression. I also found a good working environment made up of very professional people and a good company culture.

When you’re not developing a nice frontend for our solutions, what do you do in your time?

I enjoy reading and watching my favorite manga and anime. I like to take long walks in parks and observe nature. I also love to cuddle my four cats.

What were the top 3 books that you think anybody should’ve read at least once?

I usually read more technical books, but when I have time, I like to read historical-based romances like “L’agnese va a morire” by Renata Viganò and “Sostiene Pereira” by Antonio Trabucchi. I also like the classic novel “1984” by George Orwell.

What is your favorite base in the DNA (adenine, guanine, cytosine or thymine)?

Adenine. When I was little, I loved watching an animated series called “Siamo fatti cosi“. This television cartoon explains the human body and its functions so children can understand it. In one episode, there was the sequence of the 4 nucleotide bases in the DNA, and I loved the little hominid who personified the adenine.

Do you have a favorite chromosome and why is this your favorite one?

Although I am not a geneticist, I have to rely on the graphical provision of an overview of the chromosomes. So just from a graphic point of view, I like gene number 12 for its close-to-perfect x-shape.
